KATE IRISH
CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN ARTIST
Kate Irish is a Sydney-based artist working across representational and abstract painting.
Inspired by landscape, architecture and travel, her paintings explore perspective, atmosphere and the emotional pull of place. Through unusual viewpoints, colour and composition, Kate invites the viewer not simply to observe a scene, but to enter it.
About
Kate Irish is a contemporary Australian artist based in Sydney.
She holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Sydney and a diploma from the School of Colour and Design in Willoughby. She has also studied with artists Annette Pringle, Lyndal Beck and more recently, Jan Cristaudo.
Kate’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout Sydney and regional New South Wales. Her first solo exhibitions were held at Gallery Oscar in Pymble in 2005 and 2006. She subsequently exhibited with the gallery in group shows and at Art Sydney and Art Melbourne.
Her work has also appeared in exhibitions at Mary Place Gallery in Paddington, Hunters Hill Gallery and a number of Sydney school and university exhibitions, including Macquarie University, PLC and Queenwood.
In 2015, Kate exhibited alongside Lesley Vogel in Archways & Waterways at Studio W Gallery in Woolloomooloo. Inspired by architecture, waterways and overseas travel, this body of work explored the use of perspective to draw the viewer into the painted scene.
Her 2021 exhibition, Eucalypt Country, was held at Van Rensburg Gallery in Milton, New South Wales. These paintings celebrated the distinctive character and extraordinary resilience of Australian gum trees within a beautiful but often harsh landscape.
Perspective remains central to Kate’s practice. Her compositions frequently use unexpected viewpoints to create a sense of movement, depth and quiet drama. Rather than bringing the image forward from the canvas, she seeks to draw the viewer inward—towards the landscape, structure or moment portrayed.
Kate continues to explore both representational and abstract painting, guided by her enduring fascination with colour, place and the possibilities of composition.
